A visually spectacular and highly coveted regional masterpiece of early 20th-century monetary history: an original 1 Ruble State Note / Exchange Bona (Одинъ Рубль), bearing the date 1917 and issued by the Russo-Asiatic Bank in Harbin.
Commonly known among collectors as the "Harbin Ruble" or "Horvatovka" (named after General Dmitry Horvat, the head of the Chinese Eastern Railway), this high-quality currency was ordered from the elite American Bank Note Company in New York to replace destabilized imperial currencies in Manchuria during the Russian Civil War. The magnificent reverse side showcases a masterful, dense brown baroque framing centering around a beautifully engraved pre-war Steam Locomotive Train emerging from a plume of smoke.
Features:
- 1 single authentic historical Civil War regional banknote (Train Reverse side shown)
- Year of Design/Issue: 1917 (Circulated in China / Manchuria circa 1918–1920)
- Issuer: Russo-Asiatic Bank, Harbin Branch (Русско-Азіатскій Банкъ / Харбинъ)
- Printer: American Bank Note Company (Official imprint visible below the lower border text)
- Denomination: 1 Ruble / Одинъ Рубль
- Serial Number: 871180 (Symmetrically stamped in red typography ink)
- Condition: Circulated historic paper grade showing true vintage character, full untrimmed borders, handling folds, and natural color aging as pictured
A fascinating collectible for:
- Russian Civil War, regional White Guard, and Siberian autonomous movement collectors
- Chinese Eastern Railway (CER / КВЖД) and Manchurian regional history enthusiasts
- Banknote and paper money specialists (bonistics / railway emergency currency scripophily)
- Locomotive, steam train, and railway history engineering print curators
The banknote is photographed in clear detail against a white background so collectors can closely inspect the fine geometric safety screens, detailed textures, and authentic border conditions. You will receive the exact item shown in the photo.

- Natural signs of circulation, light handling folds, soft corners, and age-related paper toning are present due to its authentic historical background.
- Carefully packed flat with heavy-duty protective backing and shipped worldwide from Ukraine.
