This iconic series was created to raise funds "For the Benefit of Warriors and Their Families" at the outbreak of World War I, under the auspices of the Imperial Women's Patriotic Society.
This particular philatelic set stands out for its excellent study of shade, paper, and layout variations, containing multiple copies of identical denominations. The beautifully detailed, finely engraved designs showcase legendary and historical Russian defenders, including the mythical hero Ilya Muromets, St. George the Victorious on horseback, and Prince Dmitry Donskoy.
